As Maloney Properties celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re proud to recognize employees whose backgrounds, experiences, and leadership help strengthen the communities we serve.

One of those individuals is Hector Gomez, Portfolio Property Director for our Worcester portfolio and a 2026 Worcester Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree whose commitment to affordable housing, community development, and resident empowerment extends far beyond his role at Maloney.

For Hector, the work has always been personal.

As a first-generation Dominican American, he grew up watching his parents navigate life in a new country while overcoming language and cultural barriers. His mother worked as a hairdresser and his father as an operations mechanic. While both worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for their family, they often faced challenges accessing information and resources in a language they understood.

“Growing up, my parents spoke very little English, so from a young age I often served as an interpreter for my family while I was also trying to learn the language myself,” Hector recalls.

Those experiences left a lasting impression and helped shape the leader he is today.

“I learned early how important it is to have someone who can help you understand a system, advocate for yourself, and feel like you belong in a space,” Hector says.

Today, that lesson continues to guide his work in affordable housing. While Hector oversees more than 700 affordable housing units and leads a team of more than 20 employees, he remains focused on the people behind the work.

“Behind all the budgets, compliance requirements, and operational responsibilities are people and families trying to create better opportunities for themselves.”

Hector’s commitment to creating opportunities also extends beyond his role at Maloney. Through bilingual workshops focused on financial literacy, computer literacy, and tenant rights, he has helped residents access information and resources that can have a meaningful impact on their lives.

For him, providing bilingual services is more than translation.

“Language can create a sense of familiarity and belonging,” he explains. “It allows someone to ask questions they may have been uncomfortable asking otherwise.”

His passion for community development also led him to serve on the Board of Directors for the New Americans Community Development Corporation, where he helps support initiatives that provide affordable housing and opportunities for individuals and families across the region.

When asked what continues to drive him, Hector reflects on the connection between his upbringing and his work today.

“In some ways, the work I do today is an extension of what I started doing as a kid for my own family, helping people understand and navigate systems that can sometimes feel complicated or inaccessible.”

Whether supporting residents, mentoring employees, or advancing community development initiatives, Hector remains committed to one core purpose:

“For me, the common thread has always been creating opportunities for people. That’s what continues to drive me.”
